Why Website Speed Matters for SEO (and How to Fix It)

Speed is part of how Google and your visitors judge a website. Slow pages lose visitors before they read a word, and they can hold back your search visibility. This guide explains how speed relates to SEO and what to fix first.

How speed affects SEO

Google uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, alongside content relevance and links. Speed alone will not make a thin page rank, but among similar pages a faster, more stable one has an advantage, and fast pages keep more visitors, which improves engagement and conversions.

Measure first: Core Web Vitals

Test your key pages with Google PageSpeed Insights, and check the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console. The three metrics are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how quickly the main content loads. Aim for 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds to clicks and taps. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the layout jumps while loading. Aim for 0.1 or less.

Tools such as GTmetrix and WebPageTest show the waterfall of files loading, which helps you find the heaviest items.

The fixes that usually matter most

1. Optimise images

Resize images to the size they are displayed, use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, compress them and lazy-load images below the fold.

2. Use caching and a CDN

Page caching, browser caching and a content delivery network serve pages faster to visitors around the world.

3. Reduce and defer scripts

Remove unused plugins, scripts and fonts. Defer non-critical JavaScript and load third-party tags (analytics, chat, ads) carefully.

4. Minify and combine files

Minify CSS and JavaScript and remove unused CSS so browsers download and process less.

5. Choose good hosting

Slow servers undermine every other optimisation. Pick hosting with fast response times, up-to-date PHP and server-level caching.

6. Keep the site lean

Heavy themes and page builders with unused features add weight. Choose lightweight themes and keep plugins to what you need.

A simple workflow

  1. Test your homepage and top landing pages.
  2. Fix the largest issues first: images, then scripts, then caching.
  3. Retest and compare.
  4. Monitor monthly in Search Console, since new content and plugins can slow a site again.
